New and old blog

First thing first, my old blog is available at https://innocen.at/.

Note

Several posts, including this post, was originally post on https://innosu.home.blog. I have since decided to relocate back here.

I have had several iteration of blogs (as also posted here). I thought using static site generator was a great idea, but it turns out it wasn’t.

The problem is because there isn’t a set framework of how things should be organised, sometimes I just forget how to do things. How the post markdown file should be formatted. How about a code block for syntax highlighting? Or a LaTeX maths? With me not updating that frequently, sometimes I forgot about the state of the blog.

When I moved off of WordPress.com for the first time, I cited my main reason was that WordPress.com was distracting. I still stand by that statement, if you use classic editor. But with the new Gutenburg editor, I can focus more on the writing itself. It’s just better.

Another reason was that with WordPress.com free plan you are restricted to a subset of approved theme. Back then, it was also quite hard to find theme and color schema I was totally happy with, so there’s a lot of compromise. Self-hosting WordPress is also an option, but also, back then, the auto updater wasn’t good and it’s a hassle to maintain.

Now everything changed. The new WordPress site editor was very good, and with the new Twenty Twenty-Two theme, I was able to almost recreate the theme of my old blog (which is a very simple design).

Now, some of you might think if I don’t care too much, why not use other blogging service like Medium? The reason is that I hate how Medium force user to register. I’d hate to do that to my readers (not that there’s any). Many other simple blogging platform is also tech-focused like Hashnode or dev.to.

So in the ended, I returned to WordPress.
